The fearsome Mapusaurus was one of South America's most formidable predators and is presumed to have hunted in large packs. This carnosaur lived at around the same time as its larger relative the giganotosaurus and preyed on the large titanosaur of the region ranging from the argentinosaurus to the medium sized saltasaurus. The first remains found consisted of a group of individuals at different ages and sizes. The largest individuals reach a max length of about 40 ft. The name Mapusaurus translates to " earth lizard" because of the animals large size. Scientist are puzzled as to why so many Mapusaurus died together but one theory is that the animals had come across a carcass of an animal that got trapped in mud and died, the hungry Mapusaurus came in hoping for a quick and satisfying meal but found themselves trapped leaving them stuck to eventually starve to death and attract more victims to this Dino death trap. In terms of behavior Mapusaurus is close in relation to giganotosaurus so they were probably oppurtunistic hunters that took up any chance of an easy meal. Like most other giant South American predators its somewhat unknown how they managed to take down such large game. A speculated theory was that they targeted old or sick individuals or would wound their victims causing them to die from infection or blood loss.
