Gaunlong's name means "crested dragon" and it lived in what is now China. The discovery is fairly recent and remains were first found in 2006. One of the most remarkable features of this animal is its large crest, scientist are unsure about the purpose of its crest but it seems likely it may have been used as a display feature. It's likely that male guanlongs had very vibrant crest colors which they used to intimidate and frighten rival males, as well as attract females. The crest would've also certainly been used to claim social status and confirm each individual's rank. It may have been that individuals with the largest crest would've been higher in rank and maturity and younger animals would've had smaller crest holding a lower rank within the group( if these animals lived in groups). Its likely that gaunlong had feathers as well but the exact coloring of them is unknown. Believe it or not this little carnivore is actually a relative of the much larger Tyrannosaurus rex and unlike its later relative had longer arms with three claws. This animal gives vital insight into tyrannosaur evolution and how these animals went from being the size of a large dog to becoming ferocious Giants that certainly earned the title of tyrant king.
